Real stories

from Beyond Birthing Mamas

For a year and a half after my first birth, my tailbone hurt terribly and I could not sit for more than 20 minutes. Doctors and relatives told me nothing could be done about it. After a single session with Sophie, the pain was gone. Nearly a year later, my tailbone still feels great. Thanks to Sophie my quality of life is much improved!

Marsha Cook

It had been 2 years since my last child and the pain in my abdomen had been getting worse and worse. After one session with Sophie, my pain was gone and I was able to start strengthening my core. Very knowledgeable in her field!

Amber Moffat

After my first delivery I was experiencing lots of pain and discomfort and had almost no strength. Sophie gave me the strength to feel normal again — and the strength to endure another pregnancy and delivery. The difference in recovery from baby #1 to baby #2 was a world of difference, all thanks to Sophie.

FAQ

When should I start pelvic health physio after birth?

We typically recommend to come in for your initial consultation around six weeks after birth, once incisions and tears have had time to heal. That said, if you are experiencing symptoms before that or need immediate guidance about your recovery, don’t hesitate to reach out. We also offer virtual consultations in the early weeks postpartum to guide our clients through the early recovery stage. Please note that our schedule books a few weeks in advance.

I had a c-section — is this relevant for me?

Absolutely — pelvic health physiotherapy is just as important after a belly birth as it is after a vaginal birth. Pregnancy itself places significant demands on your pelvic floor, core, and surrounding structures regardless of how your baby arrived. In addition, c-section recovery comes with its own specific challenges such as scar tissue, core weakness, and pelvic symptoms that can benefit greatly from hands-on care and guided rehabilitation.

It’s been a while since I gave birth — is it too late to seek help?

It is never too late. Whether you are six weeks, six months, or several years postpartum, your body can still respond beautifully to the right support. Many of our clients come to us long after their baby was born — sometimes after being told their symptoms were just a normal part of motherhood. They are not. If something doesn’t feel right, it is always worth getting assessed.

When is it not normal anymore to have pelvic floor symptoms after birth?

Pelvic floor symptoms like bladder leakage, pelvic pain, or heaviness are common after birth — but they are never something you simply have to live with. If you are still experiencing symptoms beyond 12 weeks postpartum, it’s a sign that your body needs extra support to heal. And if you are months or even years postpartum and symptoms are persisting or worsening, it is absolutely not too late to seek help. You deserve to feel like yourself again at any stage of motherhood.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your first appointment includes a comprehensive assessment where we take the time to understand your birth experience, your symptoms, and your goals. From there, we will carry out a full pelvic health assessment which will likely include an internal pelvic examination — with your consent — to get a thorough understanding of what is going on in your body. Together you will then build a personalized treatment plan. Plan for about an hour for your first visit. You will leave with a clear picture of where you are and a roadmap for your recovery.

Can I bring my baby to my appointment?

We absolutely love babies! They are always welcome in our space. We have a bouncy chair and toys to keep your little one happy while we focus on you. We know that finding childcare can be a barrier to seeking support — please don’t let that stop you from getting help.

How many sessions will I need?

Every recovery journey is different and the number of sessions will depend on our assessment findings, your symptoms & goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some clients notice significant improvement after just one or two sessions, while others benefit from ongoing care over several weeks or months. After your initial assessment, we will give you a clearer idea of what to expect for your specific situation.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. Simply reach out by email and we will get you set up with an appointment.

Is pelvic health physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Pelvic health physiotherapy is a regulated physiotherapy service and is therefore covered by most extended health insurance plans. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage and annual limits. We do not direct bill, so payment is collected at the time of your appointment and we will provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance provider.
